Hands On With Huawei's Mate 8 Phablet
LAS VEGAS—Huawei is a conundrum. Globally, it's the third-biggest smartphone maker in the world, well ahead of LG. As we found with the Mate S and the Google Nexus 6P, Huawei makes compelling high-end phones and tablets.
Simply information technology'due south only been able to get low-end, lower-quality products into U.Southward. carriers' lineups. Today at CES, Huawei showed off the Mate viii phablet, GX8 phone, and MediaPad M2 10 tablet, all of which would look good in whatsoever carrier's lineup.
Easily On With the Huawei Mate 8
The Mate 8 was introduced this November in China, simply this was our first gamble at getting agree of Huawei'southward new flagship. Huawei gave us a week with the phablet, which was plenty of time to become a proficient feel for some of its idiosyncracies.
The Mate 8 starts at 599 Euros, which puts information technology inside hitting distance of the large dogs similar Apple and Samsung. Its all-metal build quality is excellent, although information technology's squarer and a little more than formal than the curves both Apple and Samsung take been crazy almost recently. The fingerprint scanner on the back is easy to achieve with your forefinger, and it's super fast and accurate.
The phone'due south best feature is its super-bright 6-inch screen, which makes it terrific for reading books. It's only 1,920-by-one,080 resolution—Samsung'south phablets are much higher-res—simply I didn't notice until I was also holding a Samsung phone, at which signal I was diddled away by the Samsung's competing sharpness.
The Mate 8 has sixteen-megapixel and 5-megapixel cameras. The main 16MP photographic camera comes with a lot of fun filters, just it's noisier in indoors lighting conditions than I'd adopt. The selfie camera has a swell little guide to make you await at the bodily camera rather than downwards, though.
Performance on the ii.3GHz Kirin 930 processor is similar to what we saw on the Mate S: excellent productivity operation with and then-so gaming frame rates. This is the starting time Huawei telephone nosotros've seen with Android Marshmallow half-dozen.0, although you lot wouldn't know it because of Huawei'south very thick EMUI pare. Most notably, EMUI gets rid of Android'south app tray—all your icons are on the abode screens. Huawei says that's simpler.
I'm as well concerned EMUI is a battery hog. I used the Mate 8 without a SIM card, in Wi-Fi-only mode, and however it would oft run its gigantic 4000mAh battery down afterwards two days in standby. Samsung phones have the aforementioned problem; HTC's more often than not practise not.
The biggest remaining question about the Mate eight is whether information technology volition exist sold in the U.S. Huawei officially says no, while the Wall Street Periodical says yeah. According to my own sources, Huawei is yet internally discussing whether to sell the telephone in our marketplace, every bit sales of unlocked smartphones that cost over $500 in the U.S. haven't generally gone well for anyone except Apple tree.
Easily On With the Huawei GX8
The Huawei GX8 is the U.S. version of the Huawei G8, which was introduced last September. This is a midrange, 5.v-inch, Android 5.one-powered smartphone with a 1,920-by-i,080 screen, a sizeable 3000mAh battery and a thoroughly center-of-the-road 1.5GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 615 processor on lath. Information technology has 16GB of storage plus a MicroSD card slot, 13-megapixel and 5-megapixel cameras, and a fingerprint sensor on the back. Huawei says information technology'south the same sensor as on the Mate S and Mate 8, which is a fast, accurate model. The trunk is all metallic, which you commonly don't get at a sub-$350 price bespeak.
The GX8 is well-congenital, with a cool metal frame and glass to the edges. I merely got a few minutes with it, and frankly, it'southward adept looking but a little nondescript in terms of operation. I'm concerned about Huawei's thick EMUI pare over Android, which gets rid of the app tray and adds a lot of powerful, but confusing functionality, like letting y'all crop images past knocking on the screen with your knuckles.
The GX8 will exist available onetime in Q1 unlocked, compatible with T-Mobile and AT&T for $349. That makes it a little less expensive than Google's Nexus 5X ($379), but a step up from the OnePlus Ten ($249).
Late this evening, meanwhile, Huawei has an event for its Honor sub-brand, where it's expected to denote an affordable, unlocked Honor smartphone for the U.Due south.
Hands On With the Huawei MediaPad M2
The MediaPad M2 x is designed for watching movies and drawing pictures. So, unlike the Samsung Galaxy Tab S2 and Apple tree iPad Pro, it defaults to landscape mode, with the dwelling house push button centered for landscape. It also has a 16:ix, 1,920-past-1,200 10-inch screen, unlike the higher-resolution iv:3 screens on its major competitors. That's a 1080p flick resolution and a film aspect ratio, so you see where Huawei is going.
The M2 runs Android 5.1 on a 2GHz octa-core Kirin 930 processor and will come in 16GB and 64GB storage sizes, both with a MicroSD bill of fare slot. The tablet is just 0.28 inches thick, and weighs 17 ounces. There'south a xiii-megapixel camera on the back and a 5-megapixel camera on the front. Super-loud quad speakers (treble on the top, bass on the bottom) blast sound with Harmon/Kardon's Clari.fi enhancement technology. I demoed the tablet in a very loud room, but I can ostend that yep, the speakers are loud.
I'g too intrigued by the M2'due south Wacom pressure-sensitive pen, which will be included with the 64GB model. The tablet comes with Wacom'south Bamboo app, which suggests that the pressure-sensitivity will exist compatible with any app in Wacom'due south ecosystem. That's encouraging.
Holding the Mediapad in my hand fabricated it clear that information technology'southward a major competitor to Samsung. The tablet is thin, polish, and light, and the screen is abrupt, although the colors aren't every bit rich equally Samsung's AMOLEDs. I played with the stylus a flake, and palm rejection and pressure sensitivity are both expert. Still, the stylus is a little bit slippery on the screen, and pressing difficult creates a slight ripple effect in the screen plastic, similar to the Microsoft Surface Pro 4 only unlike the harder iPad Pro + Pencil combination.
The Mediapad M2 comes in four configurations. There'due south a silver, 16GB/2GB model ($349 for Wi-Fi, $399 LTE) and a gold, 3GB/64GB model ($419 Wi-Fi, $469 LTE). Only the 64GB model has the Wacom force per unit area-sensitive layer and pen. Both are coming to the U.S., but via direct sale, not necessarily through carriers.
Huawei Watch Elegant and Jewel
The visitor likewise showed off some new colors and styles for the Huawei Watch (the Jewel has 68 Swarovski crystals around the face for $599) and the Nexus 6P (gold). The new watches accept a built-in speaker and then you can make telephone calls on them; when I tried it in the hall, the speaker was too quiet to hear, but it was a very, very noisy room. Bank check them out in the video beneath.
